October 28, 1636: Harvard University Established

The oldest institute for higher learning in United States, Harvard University, founded by the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony on October 28, 1636.

History of Harvard began with the establishment of a college at New Towne, which later renamed Cambridge.

October 28, 1790: Nootka Sound Controversy Resolved

The dispute on the seizure of vessels at the Nootka Sound, on the western coast of Vancouver Island, that nearly caused a conflict between Spain and Great Britain.

The dispute ended the Spanish claim to the monopoly of settlement and trade on the western coast of North America and this made possible the eventual expansion of the Canadian to the provinces of Pacific.

October 28, 1886: Statue of Liberty Dedicated

On this day, the US President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty. The statue is a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States of Nation on the Liberty Island In Upper New York Bay.

October 28, 1914: Physician and Researcher Jonas Salk birth

Jonas Edward Salk or in short Jonas Salk– born October 28, 1914 in New York (US) and died on June 23, 1995, La Jolla (California). The American Physician and Medical Researcher, who developed the first effective and safe vaccine for polio.

Edward received an M.D. in 1939 from the New York University, where he worked with Thomas Francis Jr. Salk later joined Francis in 1942 at the University of Michigan and became part of the group who were working to develop an immunization against influenza.

October 28, 1919: Volstead Act Implemented

National Prohibition Act or Volstead Act, US law enacted in 1919-taking effect from 1920. The Act was made for the enforcement for the Eighteenth Amendment, prohibiting the sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages.

The act vetoed by the Pres. Woodrow Wilson and it became law after Congress override the veto.

October 28, 1955: Richest Person on Earth, Bill Gates birth

American Entrepreneur and Computer Programmer Bill Gates– Founder of Microsoft- the worlds largest software company was born.

Bill wrote his first software program at the age of 13. In his school days, he formed a group of programmers and computerized their school’s payroll system by introducing Traf-O-Data software.

In 1975, then a second year student at Harvard, Gates joined his friend Paul G. Allen to develop software for the first microcomputers. They started by adapting BASIC, a programming language used on large computers, to use on microcomputers.

October 28, 1965: Gateway Arch in St. Louis was Completed

The Finnish-born American architect Eero Saarinen designed “The Gateway Arch” in St. Louis, Missouri in order to commemorate the historical role as “Gateway to the West” was completed.

October 28, 1967: Influential Actress Julia Roberts birth

The deft performances by the American actress Julia Roberts that helped making her the highest paid actress and the most influential actresses in 1990s and early 2000s.

October 28, 1971: Great Britain Launched First Earth Satellite

On this day, Great Britain launched Prospero, the first and only Earth Satellite. This Satellite was launched with British Black Arrow missile from the rocket testing facility at Woomera, Australia.

The Satellite weighed 145 pounds (66 kg) and primarily designed to test the efficiency of various technical measures and innovations.

October 28, 2007: First Woman President of Argentina

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner– born Feb 19, 1953 in Argentina, who was a lawyer and politician and in 2007 became the first female elected President of Argentina.

Cristina held her office until 2015 and succeeded her husband Nestor Kirchner– served as the President from 2003 to 2007.
